Green tea is known as a potent source of polyphenols. Polyphenols often have antioxidant effects and are broken down into different categories. Green tea contains EGCG which is a catechin. Catechins are grouped as flavonoids (a large group of plant-based phytonutrients). Catechins prevent cell damage and reduce free radical formation.
Aside from the standard antioxidant benefits (which make Green Tea excellent for DNA repair and fighting UV damage) EGCG specifically is thought to help control oil production, moisturize, reduce inflammation, shrink blood vessels, and also has antibacterial properties making green tea an ideal addition to a skin care routine for people presenting with rosacea, combination skin, oily skin or acne. Green tea is beneficial for the skin via both internal consumption and topical application.
